CITY
COUNCIL UNITES BEHIND PLEDGE TO ROLL BACK MILLAGES
Property Tax Reassessments Will Not Result in Windfalls to Taxing Bodies |

| New
Orleans, La. (August 1, 2007) - Council President Arnie Fielkow is joined
by the entire New Orleans City Council to assure New Orleans property owners
that, in connection with the quadrennial reassessment, millages controlled
by the city will be rolled back. This announcement should calm fears that
property taxes will increase across the board and assure property owners
that the millages will go down. In addition, Councilmembers have promised
to lobby the Louisiana Tax Commission to assure that this reassessment was
equitable throughout the city, in all Assessor districts.
Council President Arnie Fielkow comments, "It is
important that the taxpaying citizens of New Orleans have confidence that
this reassessment should result in a lowering of the millage, which will
place New Orleans' tax rates at a more competitive level to those in surrounding
parishes, thereby encouraging investment in the city."
As a result of the legally required quadrennial reassessment,
the citywide assessed values of property owners will likely increase.
This Council's promise assures that millages will be rolled back and taxing
bodies will not receive a windfall. In addition, the Councilmembers pledge
to maintain a responsible budget in 2008. Nevertheless, the Council urges
property owners who feel that their assessments reflect values above fair
market value to appeal to their Assessors by August 15, 2007.
